Horta - Guinardo

Horta-Guinardó is Barcelona’s third largest district and is located in the north-east of the city, between the districts of Gràcia and Nou Barris. It is characterized by its uneven landform consisting of mountains, hills and valleys. Its profusion of green spaces makes it one of the most attractive places for those in search of peace and quiet in the open air.

The history of Horta-Guinardó can be traced back to 965 AD, and the old valley of Horta, which is now known as the Vall d’Hebrón. This is where the village of the same name was founded. Like Gràcia, Sants, Sant Martí, and other villages around the city, Horta was annexed to Barcelona, but somewhat later, in 1904. It was a mainly rural area and wasn’t developed until the 1950s when people from Catalonia and the rest of Spain came to the city in search of work and settled here.

Nestling among the slopes of these neighbourhoods, we can discover authentic jewels of Barcelona’s architecture and cutting-edge art, such as the Pavilion of the Republic and Joan Brossa‘s sculpture “Poema visual” (Visual Poem). And in sharp contrast, in the old quarter, you can enjoy the narrow streets and small squares which remind us of the rural past of this former village, such as the Plaça d’Eivissa and its environs, and the old sinkson Carrer Aiguafreda, where people used to take their laundry.

Together with first-rate healthcare facilities, such as the Vall d’Hebron medical complex and the Llars Mundet hospital, the district has outstanding green areas and recreational zones which include part of the Parc de Collserola; and the wonderful, late-18th-century neo-classical-styleParc del Laberint, with its pond and intricate maze of pollarded cypress trees.

Hilly residential district El Baix Guinardó centers on the landmark Princep de Girona Gardens, with pine trees and an open-air cafe around a man-made lake on the site of a former barracks. There’s more green space nearby at Parc de Les Aigües, where winding paths rise up slopes planted with orange and fig trees. Low-key dining options include casual, family-run Catalan, Peruvian, and Italian restaurants.

Can Baró is a neighborhood in the Horta-Guinardó district of Barcelona, Catalonia. It is home to the Turó de la Rovira Museum of the History of Barcelona heritage site, where anti-aircraft batteries were stationed during the Spanish Civil War.

El Guinardó is different than most of Barcelona’s neighbourhoods as it is a mountain side suburb, as result this is a residential area with few tourists.

A quiet and prosperous residential neighborhood, La Font d’en Fargues is named after a centuries-old mountain spring and fountain, housed within a brickwork alcove. Hillside trails wind through pine forest in the upper reaches of Guinardó Park, where benches overlook the city skyline and the Mediterranean. A handful of low-key taverns and tapas bars serve simple Catalan food and wine.

El Carmel, or simply Carmel, is a neighbourhood in the district of Horta-Guinardó, in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Carmel is in the municipal district of Horta-Guinardó.

Houses and apartment blocks line the streets of La Teixonera, a hillside neighborhood in Barcelona’s Horta-Guinardó district. Green spaces include Parc dels Garrofers with its murals, and leafy Plaça de la Vall d’Hebron. Bars and restaurants are along the streets around Plaça de Taxonera, a central gathering hub. At the spacious Mercat de la Vall d’Hebron market, merchants sell food and handcrafted items.

Sant Genís dels Agudells, located at the foot of the Collserola mountain range, is one of the most curious neighborhoods of the city.

Bordering the sprawling Serra de Collserola Natural Park, panoramic views of the 1950s planned neighborhood of Montbau can be seen from the Arrabassada and Montbau viewpoints, as well as the Montbau Watch Tower. The University of Barcelona Mundet Campus is home to sculptures and the grand Renaissance-style Gardens of the Palau de les Heures. The area also offers a pedestrian square, plus casual bars and eateries.

Laid-back suburb La Vall d’Hebron is known for its former Olympic venues, including a soccer field and swimming pool in the foothills of the Collserola mountains. Parc de les Rieres d’Horta offers stylish playgrounds, eco-walks lined with cypress and white pine trees, and community concerts in a central plaza. Dining options include tapas at casual taverns and upmarket Catalan cuisine in elegant restored farmhouses

Situated in the flat area between Passeig de la Vall d’Hebron and El Carmel, La Clota is an ancient, down to earth neighbourhood, made up of large and small houses with vegetable plots.

Horta is a neighbourhood in the Horta-Guinardó district of Barcelona. It is documented for the first time in 965, in which appears as the valley of Horta. Originally the neighbourhood was the main town of the former municipality of Horta which was more or less as the current district limits of Horta-Guinardó.
