In 1920 Karl Faust founded the Marimurtra botanical garden in Blanes with the aim of increasing knowledge of Mediterranean plants and landscapes. However, today we can find plants from all over the world in an attempt to preserve plant life that is threatened or in danger of extinction.

It is currently one of the most important botanical gardens in Europe, both for the number of plants growing in the open air (some three thousand species), its area (sixteen hectares) and for its great number of visitors, which some years have been more than half a million.

As well as the botanical garden, the founder created a research centre: the International Station of Mediterranean Biology, a pioneer institution in Spain of innovative work in the fields of evolutionary biology and of the molecular system of Mediterranean plants. Scientific expeditions to different regions of the world have contributed a large part of the garden’s plants. The rest have been obtained through exchanges with other botanical gardens all over the world.

The route of the garden’s main path takes about an hour and is full of beautiful views of the Mediterranean. The plants are distributed according to scientific criteria, but also aesthetically. There are even poems to be found in various intimate corners of the garden.
